Remsenburg is a residential hamlet bordering the Moriches Bay in the western portion of the Hamptons, free of all commercial land. The Main Street is lined with vintage historic homes fronted by continuous white picket fences, hedgerow and century old trees. Several narrow single lanes lead visitors from the main road down to the bay and various creeks. This bucolic community does feature an elementary school, post office, academy and art gallery, yacht squadron, dual houses of worship and, of course, a historic cemetery.

Remsenburg is located on the south shore of Eastern Suffolk County approximately 75 miles from mid-town Manhattan. It is a hamlet of about 3 square miles in The Township of Southampton bordered by Eastport and Seatuck Creek on the west and Westhampton and the Speonk River on the east. As mentioned in the book  “A History of Remsenburg“, On the north the boundary is considered to be a line parallel to the Montauk Highway but 500 feet south of it. This definition has been debated since the controversial decision in 1895 to change the name of the local post office from Speonk to Remsenburg. Today Remsenburg and Speonk share the same school district but have separate post offices.

Not being an incorporated village and not having any official north/south border makes accurately determining Remsenburg’s population impossible. This is further complicated by the very large numbers of part-time residents. According to The U.S.Census Bureau in 2000, the population for the 11960 zip code was 822, representing 641 housing units. Data for the Remsenburg/Speonk school district for the year 2000 indicated a population of 2,675.

Remsenburg Association
Post Office Box 187, Remsenburg, New York 11960

The Remsenburg Association was founded in 1946. The objectives of the Association were to preserve the hamlet “as a quiet, rural community” and discourage “any new, industrial, trade or business purpose, other than agricultural”. The Association seeks to facilitate social interaction and harmony amongst its residents, preserve and foster the beautification and rural charm of the community, and act as an advocate for the safety and issues of concerns to its citizens. A volunteer committee of residents who love the community have selected programs each year that appeal to a variety of interests. These include successful golf outings at the Westhampton Country Club, garden tours of the community’s lovely private gardens, tours of many historic homes, an annual tag sale and Holiday Caroling Party as well as lectures and poetry readings. Each year, the Academy presents art exhibits featuring area artists beginning Memorial Day and continuing through mid-September. The fall is usually host to an informative lecture series. The year’s calendar of events is mailed in early May and posted on the community bulletin board on the front lawn.

The Westhampton Yacht Squadron is a privately owned sailing and social club situated on the beautiful Moriches Bay, between the Moriches and Shinnecock Inlets. From the Main clubhouse porch, there is an unobstructed view of the Bay and breathtaking sunrises, sunsets, and starry nights. The Club bustles with activity during the summer months when the calendar is full with sailing, swimming, and tennis lessons, races, and special events virtually every weekend. In the “off” season, it’s a quiet haven, where members congregate on Friday nights for dinner, an Irish coffee, and wonderful conversations around a roaring fireplace. What makes the Club such a special place, above all, is a very diverse membership comprised of year-round residents, summer folks, families, seniors, and singles. From veteran sailors to those just getting their sea legs. Brand-new members to those whose names have been in the log for generations. Though different in many ways, all Yacht Squadron members share their love for life beside the Bay at “the Club.” WYS History
